Cleaned up the Program.cs files. All tools now start up in the same manner with the same app.config-based options. Service Startup is now time-limited as per configured number of seconds. Comments added to all methods invoked from Main.

New untested Base Disk Info tool; extracted the UI elements of the Diff tool into a Shared UI library so it can be reused. Will cause more bugs - this is for testing only!

It would be awesome if, but reading the MAC address out of VS, we can somehow (perhaps via a known DHCP server?) determine the VM's IP and connect an RDP client automatically. I'm not seeing any way to get a list of assigned addresses from the VS DHCP server though...

Clicking the start button on the Bliss UI causes the following message to appear. It would be better to start the vmrc. --------------------------- VMRC Client Usage --------------------------- VMRC client usage: [-fullscreen] [-viewonly] [-reducecolors] [vmrc server URL] where: -fullscreen opens the VMRC console in the full screen mode -viewonly disables mouse and keyboard input -reducecolors enables reduced colors mode (speeds slow connections) vmrc server URL is a universal resource locator to a vmrc server. example URL 1: "vmrc://myserver.com:port/displayname" example URL 2: "192.168.1.30" (port default is 5900) --------------------------- OK ---------------------------

While testing the freezing issue, a vm was Paused. The Pause button should change to Resume. I didn't see how to resume the paused vm. P.S. Any change in a button's state (label change from, for example, Pause to Resume) should refresh the relevant thumbnail(s).

I tried to select a vm, but there was no visual feedback. Manually refreshing from the menu refreshed the UI only briefly. Finally, the UI hung. See attached screen capture.

Fixed "Launch" button on Status tool to actually launch VMRC with the appropriate command line to directly connect to the selected VM. Warning: if the VM is not started, the VMWC will attempt to start it!

Diff tool can now recursively search for vhds from any folder, not just preconfigured search folders. It can also optionally add the folders searched to the permanent Search Folders list. Oh and some UI clean-up.

PreTravel Check-In: I'm off to Turkey tomorrow and did some reorganising of the tools' startup code to make it a bit more uniform. Also still hunting the Group View user control bug: works fine in Status but not in Diff. FYI: Diff tool is very close to completion!

It would be helpful if the virtual machines in the tree control could use visual features to provide a quick, high level overview. For example, stopped machines could be red, paused yellow, running green. Or use icons next to the machine name to indicate status.

Vision

Provide Windows XP users with WinForms applications for managing Microsoft Virtual Server configurations (.vmc and .vhd files). This facilitates a wider adoption of Microsoft Virtual Server than is currently possible (eliminates need for IIS) and brings the performance benefits of the multithreaded MSVS to the multi-core desktops of today.

Scope

This project does not compete with Virtual Machine management tools. We specifically focus on having many configurations, not multiple running VMs. This is not a server management tool for provisioning VMs nor monitoring performance nor resource management.

The audience we will incorporate most feedback from are programmers, testers and trainers who have many dozens of VMs configured but only run 1 to 4 of them at any one time.

In the current scope we have two primary objectives:
1. WinForms interface to replace Virtual Server web administration interface.
2. Managed Code library providing a wrapper for the VS API to make scripting and building alternative UIs very easy in .NET (and hiding COM interop issues).

The current state of the library is that it is functional but not feature complete. All known COM interop and threading issues have now been resolved (remote connection capability is as yet unknown but being worked on), so now it is just a matter of time before we reach the feature complete milestone.

HELP

An open invite: we need a number of WinForms developers to further develop the user interface and get it more feature complete but also to get a VPC Console's look. And soon, we'll need a VPC2007 look! Anyone interested in perhaps implementing a skin-based UI? WinAmp-style UI for Virtual Server?
