I'm searching for tools that I can use to analyse a .NET app that was deadlocked.
By checking the stack traces of all threads I should be able to find the two threads involved in the deadlock. Both should have a call to Monitor.Enter or similiar on the very top of the callstack.
I wrote a little sample app that creates a deadlock with two threads and two locks using Monitor.Enter. When I looked at it with MSE I could see the stack traces of the two involved threads but could not find the call to Monitor.Enter in the stacktrace. On the very top of the stack trace was the thread method itself. I then wrapped the call to Monitor.Enter in another method and this method was displayed in the stack trace...

Does anybody have an idea why the call to Monitor.Enter is not contained in the stack trace?
Coding the gui by hand would be pretty tedious.
I am unable to reproduce the problem you are having. When I load the solution the Designers load fine for all of the forms
I've downloaded and loaded the latest source into VS 2005 (Team Suite) SP1, and I'm trying to dig into the UI design (i.e. right-click on one of the .CS files, choose "View Designer") but it's failing with the following error:

"Warning	4	The designer could not be shown for this file because none of the classes within it can be designed."

This occurs for all the UI classes that I've tried so far, including MSE\FindBox.cs, MSE\InfoSelect.cs, MSE\MainGui.cs and MSE\PreferenceForm.cs.

Is there some setting in the Project that needs to be reconfigured, so that this code can be loaded properly in the VS Designer for these classes? How was it this WinForms app was originally developed? I'm assuming that though this was created by some really smart folks at Microsoft, they still edited the UI graphically, and didn't just write the raw UI code in Notepad. :) That *would* be badass, but c'mon...
The problem is that under the debugger, the Main() function will try to get the current module and re-execute it in some GUI mode. But with VSHost, that name is wrong.

It gets the application string via:
Process p = Process.GetCurrentProcess();
string Application = System.IO.Path.GetFullPath(p.MainModule.FileName);

However, with VSHost, the application is
"C:\\dev\\MSE\\StackExplorer\\MSE\\bin\\Debug\\MSEPart.vshost.exe"

So Main() will call CreateProcess() directly on a vshost process without actually having VS start debugging it, which obviously will not work. (Note managed-debugging, unlike native, does not support debugging a child-process, and so the debugger won't automatically attach to the newly created process to start cooperating with VSHost).

If you Ctrl+F5 (launch outside of debugger), then it runs fine. In that case, Application will be:
"C:\\dev\\MSE\\StackExplorer\\MSE\\bin\\Debug\\MSEPart.exe"
and so it launches the correct process.

I notice there's a 'debugMode' bool in Main() that you can manually change to override this behavior, but you shouldn't have to physically change Main() in order to launch it under the debugger.

This makes a bad first impression of using the tool because you build it under VS, press F5, and expect it to just work without having to modify Main().

Here's the main function from the version I'm looking at:

public static int Main(string$$ args)
{
//if true then new process isnt created which allows easier debugging
bool debugMode = false;

IntPtr INVALID_HANDLE_VALUE = (IntPtr)(-1);
if (args == null || args.Length == 0)
{
const int STD_OUTPUT_HANDLE = -11;
IntPtr stdOut = GetStdHandle(STD_OUTPUT_HANDLE);

//if the stdOuit handle is -1 or we are in debug mode then run the gui
if ((stdOut == INVALID_HANDLE_VALUE) || debugMode)
{
Application.EnableVisualStyles();
Application.Run(new MainGui());
}
else

const int STARTF_USESHOWWINDOW = 0x00000001;
const int STARTF_USESTDHANDLES = 0x00000100;
const int SW_SHOW = 5;

sInfo.wShowWindow = SW_SHOW;

//send stdOutput as -1 to tell new process to open as gui
sInfo.hStdOutput = (IntPtr)(-1);

SECURITY_ATTRIBUTES pSec = new SECURITY_ATTRIBUTES();
SECURITY_ATTRIBUTES tSec = new SECURITY_ATTRIBUTES();
pSec.nLength = Marshal.SizeOf(pSec);
tSec.nLength = Marshal.SizeOf(tSec);

//create the new process
CreateProcess(Application, CommandLine,ref pSec, ref tSec, true, DETACHED_PROCESS,
IntPtr.Zero, null, ref sInfo, out pInfo);
}
}
else
{
//run in command line mode if arguments are present
int error = 1;
using (ArgumentExecuter argExecute = new ArgumentExecuter(args))
{
try
{
if ((error = argExecute.ExecuteArguments()) != 0)
{
Console.WriteLine(argExecute.ErrorMessage);
}
}
catch (System.IO.IOException ex)
{
error = 1;

The problem is that under the debugger, the Main() function will try to get the current module and re-execute it in some GUI mode. But with VSHost, that name is wrong.

It gets the application string via:
Process p = Process.GetCurrentProcess();
string Application = System.IO.Path.GetFullPath(p.MainModule.FileName);

1. Worker process for ASP.NET w3wp.exe,
2. Biztalk service process BTSNTSvc.exe etc.

Another question: How to get more information for (Source Unavailable) items (method names or parameter names and its values)

How easy is it to add some kind of auditing module to output what parameters were passed (in in case they are of string and other primitive types). This might be AOP programming and I don't know where to start. Can I dynamically inject an AOP dll into an arbitrary process an its sturtup Application domain and on demand start logging method calls. Please see:

It takes some really useful functions from the WinDbg product (and others) and provides a very simple UI that users can use to keep track of what is happening on the stack.

My only recommendation would be to show a list of objects (VM address, size, type def.) like what you can get from doing a !dumpheap -stat in windbg.

Perhaps from a seperate menu command.

UPDATED WIKI: MSE Assignment Agreement Instructions

So, you can build MSBee on the command line with msbuild.exe or using VS 2005. The key difference is that when you change the settings.targets file and build on the command line, msbuild.exe immediately picks up on those changes. This is because msbuild reloads the project files each time you build and those projects files are importing the settings.targets file. Thus, each time you build, your settings.targets file is reloaded.

In the VS IDE, each project is loaded once when you open the MSBee solution. If you try to alter the settings.targets file after you've opened the projects in the IDE, the changes won't take affect until your reload the projects. You can do this by right clicking on each project and selecting Unload Project. Once the project is unloaded, right click on the project again and select Reload Project. Alternatively, you can close the entire solution and reopen it. Until you reload your projects in the IDE, the changes to settings.targets won't take affect.

For MSE Developers: RE: MSE - Can't Build

originally posted by Vince P

I was looking at Sara's answer to another person's problem and she recommended to close and reopen the solution. I hadn't done that when I made changes to targets (didn't know I had to). So I have now closed and reopened the solution and was able to build the solution. I guess the targets file is only read at the time the solution is open and so any changes to it are not noted unless the solution is reopened.

Thanks for your help it works now.
