Have a homegrown stab at this conversion. Will look into the Toolkit to see if it can help. There is a pretty desent .NET API for ST, so it's definitly doable.

We're looking at a one time (hopefully) migration so the resources i can put into this tool is limited. But if there are others out there that are looking into the same issue we might benefit from some sharing.

I think i have got every thing setup correctly and when i create vs session for the first time for smaller set it works fine and then create second set with the same TFS project it says it completed the migration but wont migrate any thing.

Can someone please help?

Synch 2 instances of TFS. This may let us get around todays TFS limitation. accoring to backup and restore single Team projects.

My company uses bugzilla for defect tracking but my dev team used TFS. TFS is specially useful for tracking the work done for build/releases.

Hi, we're using CVSNT for source control and BugTracker.NET for tracking bugs/issues. Since we've decided to switch to use TFS 2008, we would like a tool to do a one time conversion. It seems like no commercial products are available for that and this tool is the only one close. Without detail instructions on how to make this migration tool work for CVSNT and BugTracker, we definately need some help.

Is there anyone suceesfully did these conversions before, using this or other tools? Would you please shed some light?? THANKS in advance.

Stanley, I think thats because you dont have the WITWSS dll in the folder that your running the migration console from.
Either drop that dll in the folder or remove that provider from the list to load(if you not doing a WSS task migration).

Interesting approach. That would probably work well in situations where perf and scalability aren't major concerns, or where you know that the toolkit's consuming app is going to be lightweight. I'm certainly targeting the latter -- we'll see how well I hit that target.

A better answer would be that you could try to run the sync tool on your tfs server. But build a web service that calls your sync tool. That way your client apps can use this web service to invoke the tool.
I havent tried it yet in practice, however.

You will need to install the TFS client, that will have the binaries you are looking for.

At a minimum, it looks like if you want to use the toolkit on a standalone box, you need to install an otherwise unused TFS server on that machine as well, or just manually copy the binaries and add them to the GAC on your toolkit box -- both options probably violate the EULA.

The toolkit does not have to be run from the TFS machine. It communicates with the TFS machine via tcp/ip and uses the TFS api's.

Hi Everybody,

Unfortunately I can't make it working under the newest version of Windows 2008.

I've downloaded the archive, extracted it, got the same error as jpark18, resolved it, compiled successfully, changed configuration file but when I try to launch MigrationConsole I receive thais error:
"Error occured while loading configuration file ''<filePathHere>" .
An unknown error occured while loading the migration configuration. There is an error in XML document.

After debugging the project I've figured out that the exception is thrown here:
line 64 in MigrationProvider in Microsoft.TeamFoundation.Migration.Toolkit
It is not possible to create a type : >>Microsoft.TeamFoundation.Migartion.Toolkit.WorkItemTracking.WssWorkItemTrackingProviderFactory<<

Does anyone successfully ran MigrationConsole under Windows 2008?

Hello-

Does the Toolkit assume that it will always be run from the TFS machine, or has Microsoft created a redistributable that we can use to just get the binaries that the Toolkit references?

There are plenty of development teams using SVN for version control that would like to transition to TFS. If you are a member of one of those teams, please vote for this issue. I'd like to create a CodePlex project for a SVN to TFS tool, and if there is enough interest I'll create it.

So... what needs to be included in the requirements for a SVN to TFS tool? Is 1 way migration enough, or is bi-directional syncing needed? How about labels? Branching? Anything else?

If you have thoughts on what a SVN to TFS tool should look like, please leave your comments or attach a doc.

Bi-Directional Syncing would be great. It's easier to migrate from SVN to TFS if one knows, that it's not a one-way trip.

Branches should be included in migration. Labels could be included. Heuristic: SVN Branches that are located inside a "tags" folder and have no history entries since the branch-revision could be treated as labels.

We will be in need of a Source Gear Vault to TFS migration path before we can conceivably look at moving to TFS. We have about 5gig of data in our Vault repository (obviously we had no choice but to abandon SourceSafe many years ago) so we’d be looking at a single point migration and change over. However I’ve found no tools to assist with this as yet so unfortunately I can’t ‘sell’ TFS until the tool(s) exist.
Migration from Mantis to TFS would also be nice, however given the current licensing structure I’m not sure I can sell, or should try to sell, a change over in our Bug Tracking System.

Many shops have PVCS and are unhappy with features and capabities of PVCS, especially deep integration with Visual Studio for .NET shops. Introducing a converter for PVCS to TFS would be very useful for shops looking to move from a version control product to a full lifecycle product would be great.
