Media Player Web Part using SharePoint 2007 and Silverlight

The URL column in a Link List passes a value like url, urldescription through the Web Part connection and so naturally, the media player web part can't play a url like http://url,http://url and throws a network error. Instead using a regular text column in the list will work fine since there won't be the duplication of URLs in the string argument.

After intalling player on Windows 2008 it works but every few days, or if there is any activity on website (change on the site) it breaks, giving System.Web.Preview error. When reinstalled or reset the IIS it starts working. Any idea what is going on?

Hi to all,

I've installed on my portal this web part, but when I've tried to play a file I've received this error :

Error loading Media File : AG_E_INVALID_FILE_FORMAT

I've tried with mpg, avi, divx, wmv but I've always received this error...

Any idea?

How can we modify the web part to play the video as soon as user clicks on the radio button? Currently user has to click on the 'Play' button to run the video, this step I want to avoid.

I guess this requires changes in the media player 'js' file?

Your suggestions are welcome. If somebody has done it , please send me the source.

Getting this error whenever I click the radio button on the connected link list. Any ideas on what is causing that? Am I missing something on the server side?

Have this in SharePoint site, looks good,having an issue with .wmv extension files. It throws an error *'A_E_UNKNOWN_ERROR'*. Please suggest ASAP.

I know its possible to connect this to a document library, but is it possible to connect to a dataview webpart? I'd like to be able to take video's from several libraries (sources) and play them on one page. I tried, but cannot figure out what field to use for the connection. BTW, wonderful webpart. Thanks.

The MediaElement xaml element supports audio in these formats: WMA 7/8/9, and most flavors of MP3. It also supports streaming through ASX playlists - which if I am not mistaken can include audio clips.

This web part would probably work for audio only - but we havent tried it out specifically. You would probably want to modify the xaml skin a little, to make the MediaElement itself invisible and to also compact the controls since a playback area would no longer be needed.

1) Compile the project --- confirm that the post build event has executed (see Post build error)
2) Copy the wsp file to the sharepoint server
3) Add the wsp file in the newly created deployment folder to sharepoint with STSADM -o addsolution -filename Ratman.SharePoint.SharePointSandBoxMediaPlayer.wsp
4) using SharePoint Central Administration -> Operations Tab -> Solution Management select Ratman.SharePoint.SharePointSandBoxMediaPlayer.wsp and click Deploy Solution.
5) enable the feature for the your site from Site settings -> Site Collection Features

You should now have the web part added to your site's web part gallery. You can then edit it's properties changing it's Quick Add Group and other settings to your own requirements.

CREATED ISSUE: Post build error

The postbuild script for this project will not execute correctly if the working folder for the project has a space in it (ie: c:\document and settings\you\My Documents)

Quickest work around is to place the project in a folder without spaces in the path.

I tried to move the files to my server and hit deploy.cmd. Did not seem to work. I also had a error message when I unzipped the files.

Since this uses Silverlight 1.0 to display the video, you will need to be sure that your media files are in a format that it supports - basically WMV for now: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb980063.aspx

You can use Expression Media Encoder to convert from many formats into a compatible WMV.

If you add the web part and the document library both to a page (the same page), and then while the page is still in edit mode, click the drop-down menu in the titlebar for either the web part or the document library. Then click the "Connections" sub-menu. If you are editing the web part then there will be an option to "Get Data From..." or if editing the document library then there will be a "Provide Data To". Click that and then select the title of the other object. After a few moments, a dialog window should appear that prompts you to select a source column from the Document library. Select "Document URL" from this list. This will establish a data connection between the two objects on the page, and the document library itself will gain a new column with radio buttons that you can use to select the current video to be played.

I think allowing the user to click a media (file) from a document library then playing it directly to the Player would be good. At the minute I'm using the standalone MediaPlayer WebPart where only single file can be played
