The view gets very cluttered, if you have many empty iterations / areas. Sometimes you end up having more iterations / areas then work items on the screen.

There should be an option under "Display By" to show work items by "Area then Iteration and "Iteration then Area". This will give beter flexabiliy for users who make maximum use of these options.
