19th November 2008: Another heartbeat update here as work continues. As a teaser though, here is a work in progress Screenshot of the Empty Character Library.
2nd October 2008: Work continues on what will now be the first release of the Beta stage for Amuse. Can't show anything yet as all the new parts still need some assembly but work is progressing. This is more of a post to show the project hasn't died. :)
18th September 2008: Sept 2008 2nd Weekly is currently delayed while large amounts of work are on the User Interface to replace the 'Simple' one used during testing.
7th September 2008: Sept 2008 1st Weekly is available for download. Please make sure to uninstall the .net Framework version 3.5 SP1 Beta before you install this release.

Hi!

This is the project site for Amuse, a new MU* Client that is being designed particularly for MUSH and MUCK roleplayers.
We've asked approximately 297 billion of them what they would want from a new client and, with the help of about that many cups of tea, we'll see what we can do.

Also, if you're curious about such things, it is an open source project written in C# and XAML for the .net Framework version 3.5 SP1 and the Windows Presentation Foundation.

Important Notice to Testers

This version of Amuse and all future versions of Amuse will now use the .net Framework 3.5 SP1 RTM. You must ensure you remove the Beta of the .net Framework 3.5 SP1 from your PC before running Amuse Setup. Setup will automatically install the correct version of the .net Framework as long as you have uninstalled the Beta. Please contact Nidonocu or ask on the Discussions tab if you have trouble uninstalling the Beta.
This version will replace the previous weekly release of Amuse. It will not replace any Experimental releases. Please uninstall Experimental versions via the Control Panel manually.

Third weekly release as part of the Alpha 'Nidorina' stage.

Items fixed for this release:

Changes:

Added Task Dialog interface for close confirmation
Refactored and improved existing functions for future development
Changed About box to use old tab UI system for testing.
Added testing sandbox for new tab system.
Added support for bug in PennMUSH version 1.8.3 PatchLevel 0 where bad ANSI tags are sent to the client. Amuse now detects and ignores these codes.

Missing in Action:

Background and text colour option disabled while work is ongoing in visual presentation areas.
Due to changes in the original server environment, the item ''Berry Blender' Crash' can not be reproduced. If following the restoring of the original environment, the bug can still not be reproduced, it will be Closed.

New Post: Status Update

Wow, a user. o_O; Ahem, its kind of shocking to get this post, though I suppose I should pay attention to my actual download statistics.

I can say work is continuing if a bit slowly. The Windows 7 announcements have given me some further inspiration and I'm trying to push forward now to get another release out. The next UI jump as Mark said is a big one as I'm adding tabbing and basic saved data support so that's a lot of pieces that all have to be implemented at once.

The post is a nice kick in the pants for me though and I'll see if I can get some kind of release out for the start of December!

The GUI needs to be done. The current interface was just a soda can by comparison to what it may look like when it goes beta. Also the dev staff has been pretty busy with other things, so just give them time.

Hi,

I was just wondering if the developer(s) could give us any sort of a status update on how the project is coming along? I realize that a beta release takes a lot of effort, and usually a lot of time, but there have been no even one line updates since the beginning of October.

Curious more because I want to know if the project is still alive and well, or abandoned. I'll wait a long while for a new, great MU client that is tailored to work with Vista/7, but like many others, I don't want to wait in vain. ;)

Created Issue: Scroll Inactive Tabs

When a tab is inactive, its output window is not scrolled.

When a tab needs to be shown, its contents should be up to date.

Created Issue: Support Extended Character

Extended ANSI characters (such as é) are currently not supported.

These should be supported automatically.

Created Issue: Scrolling can cause lag

When rendering multiple incoming lines, the act of scrolling the incoming data can make the application appear slow.

The app should wait to see if another line is coming in before it starts rendering pending lines.

In addition, the app needs to support the ability to 'render now' at the request of the user and display status information that text is still coming in.

What is Amuse?

Amuse is an MU* client, which is an application that runs on a computer, connecting via the Internet to a remote server for the purpose of accessing online text based worlds known as MU*s.

What does MU* mean?

MU* is a shorthand to refer collectively to multi-user environments which include such examples as MUD (Multi-User Dungeon / Dimension / Domain), MUSH (Multi-User Shared Habitat / Hallucination), MUCK (Multi-User Chat Kingdom / Construction Kit) and others.
These are all different types of servers used to create text based online virtual worlds used either for the purposes of roleplay (RP) and online collaborative story telling, gaming, or just simple online communication and collaboration between people of similar interests.

What do I need to run Amuse on my computer?

Amuse is currently under development and as such uses some of the latest technologies on Windows for creating applications.
It is therefor recommend that you are running Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 3 or Windows Vista Service Pack 1. To ensure you have the latest Service Pack installed, please run Windows Update on your computer.
You may also be able to run Amuse on the latest versions of Windows Server 2003 and 2008, but this has not been tested.
Amuse will not run on earlier versions of Windows, including 2000, ME or '98.
You will also need the latest version of the Microsoft .net Framework, see the following question for details.

What version of the .net Framework do I need?

Amuse is currently being built for the .net Framework Version 3.5 Service Pack 1, this is the latest version of the framework and has now been released to the public. Early versions of Amuse on CodePlex were written for the Beta version of this framework and both those versions of Amuse and the Beta framework should be uninstalled using the Windows Control Panel.

How do I install Amuse?

Follow these handy instructions:

If you have helped before and still have a previous prototype version of Amuse (or its most early version, called Codename Boardwalk), please make sure you have uninstalled them using the Windows Control Panel in the normal way.
Go to the Release Page for the current version.
After reading the notes, click on the link marked Amuse Setup towards the top of the page, this will open a box asking if you accept the license. Please read the license and click I Agree to continue.
You will then get a standard download window appear for your web browser, choose to Save the Setup program to your computer and when the download finishes, choose to Open or Run the download.
If you are running on Windows Vista, you may then be asked to provide your administrator password or be prompted for consent to run the Setup program. Please choose to Allow the Setup program to run or enter your password if required. Remember to check that the name of the program matches the name you gave the downloaded file. (If you left it as default, this will be AmuseSetup.exe.)
Read the instructions in the Setup program's wizard and follow the steps to complete the installation.
During the installation, if required, Amuse will automatically run the .net Installer. Choose to Accept the .net Framework license if it is presented to complete the installation.

To run Amuse under Windows XP:

Click the Start button.
Point to All Programs.
Find the Amuse entry and click it.

To run Amuse under Windows Vista:

Click the Start button.
Type Amuse in to the search box.
When the results appear, select Amuse from the list.
