This is a new problem. The annotations for the content item ms269115 (en-us, vs.80) contain xml that won't travel well embedded in the web service's SOAP xml. I can fix by requesting everything but the annotation, then requesting the annotation if there is one.

Those menu items haven't been implemented yet. You can create work items for any that you want, but I think some of them already have work items.

This is a neat tool. Thank you for putting in the efforts to create this.

However, I am experiencing problems/bugs. Most of the menu options are grayed out. I can't load selections and make any customizations. Am I the only one with this issue? Here's an image for your reference -

Any idea why this is the case? I have the latest PackageThis (1.3.1).

I need to change the transform to handle that page. The hyperlinks on that page aren't formed in a way the transform recognizes, so the text ends up being stripped out.

First I want to say the idea behind this tool is great.
I'm posting this since the 1.3.1 version is supposed to skip tricky nodes and avoid crashing, but
I'm still getting unhandled exceptions atleast when performing "Select this node and and all children" on
'Development Tool and Languages\Visual Studio 2005' -node with a message "Column 'ContentId' does not allow nulls".

What It Does

Package This is a GUI tool written in C# for creating help files (.chm and .hxs) from the content obtained from the MSDN Library or the TechNet Library via the MSDN Content Service. You select the content you want from the table of contents, build a help file, and use the content offline. You are making personalized ebooks of MSDN or TechNet content. Both help file formats also give full text search and keyword search.

The code illustrates how to use the MSDN Content Service to retrieve documentation from MSDN or TechNet. It also shows how to build .hxs files and .chm files programmatically.

Prerequisites

Package This requires .NET 2.0, the .hxs SDK (MSHelp 2.0), part of the Visual Studio 2005 SDK, and the .chm SDK (HTML Help). If you just want to create .chm files, you don't need to download the .hxs components (and vice versa).

Limitations

There is a bug in HTML Help that will cause the index tab to show incorrect character encodings depending on your default locale. For example, you'll see this problem if you build a Japanese .chm file on a machine with the default locale set to English. If you change the default locale to Japanese (which requires a reboot) and rebuild the .chm file, it won't show this problem (even on an English machine).

To view .hxs files, you'll need an .hxs viewer.

Content Service Logging

Package This sends a string ("PackageThisGui") to the server to identify its requests in the web server logs. The idea is to determine whether anyone is actually using the tool.

I experienced the same problem today 08/07/2008. Very frustrating in that after 3 hours of running, the exception, no matter how many times I told it to continue, kept popping up. Not wanting to sit here clicking for an hour or more, I said Stop and I hoped, but didn't expect that on the next install, there would be some type of repair function that could pick up where it left off. No way. Too bad. Now I am uncertain when to use this otherwise great tool. This could happen quite a bit for whatever technical reason (most of us do not know the underlying web help content mechanism but we are confident you do and can fix it down the road -- BUT for now, ought to raise this issue to a HIGH priority and have a default option that cleanly gets past this exception -- even if the entire subtopic has to be stopped and you have to move to the next one at the same node level. In that case, you could log (append) the errors to a simple flat ASCII file in the directory where the app was logged and ask a Yes/No dialog if they wish to see it in Notepad (I'm trying to suggest a simple and quick workaround -- later on you can make it as fancy schmansy as you desire).

Thanks for the input. The current code can't handle what you want, but I'm working on a redesign to make the tool more useful. The main problem is that content selection needs to be separated from content download, as you mentioned. The code was not designed to download very quickly because of concerns over the ability of the content service or proxies to handle all the requests. Several times I received exceptions that the proxy received too many requests per second. I'm reworking it so it responds to the exception and slows the requests.

Also, to name some other features:

The download dialog needs to be removed and be reimplemented in the status bar or status pane (so the window can be minimized, etc).
Content should be cached on disk so it can be reused.
Duplicate pictures should be detected and replaced with a single instance.
Multithreaded downloading (I wrote a command-line tool that downloads six times faster than single-threaded).

I am sorry to say that though it might take the author of this tool a lot of time writing the code, but currently I see that this tool is practically unusable.

Selecting a node and all child nodes makes me wait for ever, and UI responsiveness is EXTREMELY SLOW. I wonder if it is done in multi-threaded techniques.

Can't we just pre-select nodes and have another button that says 'Start Downloading my selected content'?

Version 1.3 doesn't seem to correctly create links to the downloaded help pages.

For example, I recently tried to download the Windows Controls subtree from MSDN - http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb773173(VS.85).aspx - into a CHM file. Almost all the links in the downloaded subtree point back to the website, not to the downloaded pages. Clicking on TaskDialog, for example, sends you back to the MSDN website even through the page was downloaded into the CHM.

The cause might be due to a recent change in the way that MSDN formats URLs.

This is a major bug in my opinion - clicking around MSDN while offline is one of the main features of PackageThis.

I wrote some code to fix this problem by caching mtps.links, but it slows the download and increases working set. But mainly it only works if you download the right page, the one that contains the correct assetId. If I didn't download enough pages (thus resolving the assetIds) the links would still be externals. Another approach would be to rewrite the xhtml to use shortIds rather than assetIds. It would use less memory, but I'd still have to download mtps.links (and parse/deserialize it) and then rewrite all of the assetId links to shortId links.

In the table of contents and its mtps.links document, TaskDialog has the assetId of "VS|Controls|~\\controls\\taskdialogs\\taskdialogs.htm" But in content pages, TaskDialog has an assetId of "_shell_task_dialogs_cpp" PackageThis can't resolve the link because the assetIds don't match, so it points the link to the external page. I think I might be able to resolve these links by caching each page's mtps.links data and adding a list of assetIds for each page. It might work.

Um das JIT-Debuggen (Just-In-Time) zu aktivieren, muss in der
Konfigurationsdatei der Anwendung oder des Computers
(machine.config) der jitDebugging-Wert im Abschnitt system.windows.forms festgelegt werden.
Die Anwendung muss mit aktiviertem Debuggen kompiliert werden.

Wenn das JIT-Debuggen aktiviert ist, werden alle nicht behandelten
Ausnahmen an den JIT-Debugger gesendet, der auf dem
