So once I had things up and running, I began the customization process. I changed some column settings in the PKS Podcasts list (categories, etc.), while avoiding the ones that I knew were "specialty" columns -- Podcast Files, duration, etc., as those are referenced by the encoder, and I didn't want to break anything.

Well, I managed to break the main pkshomepage web part. The one with the nice grid view of the uploaded content.

I tried examining the web part settings, and restoring the original version of the PKS podcasts list, but I can't get them to display again... I see that they are still showing up in the MobileHome page, and I tried mimicing those settings, but so far to no avail.

Can someone provide some guidance as to what those web part settings are supposed to look like? I'm not sure where the problem is coming from.

This wouls be a GREAT functionality... We use Adobe Connect for online meetings, and they are archived in flv format. To be able to use the PKS front-end to manage archived meetings would be a great feature!

It would be huge if the encoder could switch between formats, for a transparent front-end experience.

Hi there,

We've actually integrated PKS with a 3rd part media trans-coding product (Rhozet's Carbon Coder), and replaced Silverlight with Adobe Flash. This allows users to upload videos in virtually any format, and then play them using Flash which is available in nearly all browsers.

Unfortunately I can't share the code for this as it is commercially sensitive, however it is entirely possible.

With just Expression Encoder, the SP1 release has support for additional formats such as H.264, however I don't know if it's been qualified for use with PKS yet.

Has anyone tried to install a codec for uploading/encoding a Adoble Flash file (SWF). We've got a few videos in this format that we'd like to expose on PKS. Any hint is appreciated.

I just finished installing the October release - went already a lot smoother allthough I had to change some stuff to get it to work in a non-root site collection. Unfortunately the Podcastdetail.aspx page gives me an error saying -

Parser Error Message: Unknown server tag 'asp:MediaPlayer'.

The uploader control seems to work fine though so I guess that I'm using the correct version of Silverlight (I have the RTW version installed). Any thoughts?

Thanks for the reply....I uninstalled and installed it again..it worked well....
but i have few issues playing podcasts...
i uploaded few podcasts and tried playing....
i get this error:
"An error occurred during the processing of . Unknown server tag 'asp:MediaPlayer'. "
If i go to podcastdetail page and click make it compatible with silverlight i get the javascript error
"Object expected".
I thought the problem might with silverlight,so i uninstalled and installed it again....
Am i missing anything here....
Note: I am not able to play the videos in silverlight.net

OK I got a step further. I uninstalled pks and installed to a new path http://podcast.pksdemo.com/sites/pks I now run into a new error causing an error on the pks home page. Here are the logs:

Hi, dyuvraj

The problem may be that when you installed PKS, all the configs, Media Encoder.config, PKS Configuration List, PKS Media Encoder Monitor Locations List, and the podcast columns were setup to point to the inertal URL. You can update these to the extranl URL and begin using only the external URL and all should work.

As a cuation this will solve the video playing through the internet URL problem but won't solve the ratings bug. If you are ready to go live now one work around would be to update the PKSItem.xsl and PKSDetailItem.XSL and remove the references to the ratings component. This will cause the internet site to work, ratings will in effect be disabled so now errors will be thrown.

Can you post the command you are using to launch the SSM installer, you can blank the server name for security.

Are you installing to the root of the site collection, or a sub site? Currently PKS needs to be installed to the Site Collection root and then manual steps can be taken to create PKS sub sites.

Unfortunately this is a known bug with the ratings component. We are integrating a a new version of ratings and expect to have it in the November or December build. Basically the current version of ratings utilizes web calls, which generate the errors you are seeing. The new version of ratings utilizes the object model only.

Also the new version of ratings will allow both podcast series and podcasters to be rated.

Hi, Anan

While there is no specific PKS API you should be able to access the content in two way;

1. You can access the uploaded objects directly by accessing them through the IIS Site / Virtual Directory that you setup during the install. The will give you access to the files but not metadata.

2. If you require access to both the files and metadata you can use the SharePoint API to access the list as you would any other list. Another option is to expose the content using SharePoint Search center this will give you more contol of the indexes.

Hi ahmethakan,

Sorry for the very basic question, but I assume after you upload a new podcast the thumbnail and duration are set correctly? Also when you view a podcaster the there podcasts and thumbnail shows on that the PodcasterDetail page?

Another thing to check is that, from Search Settings, Metadata Property Mappings, check the the PodcastThimbnail property is correctly mapped. (See the installation guide on page 14 for more info)

Unfortunately we have been unable to duplicate this issue?

I have configured october release of PKS and i am able to upload audio and video files through both internet and intranet links. When i try to play the video using the intranet link it works fine but at the same time internet link for podcast detail page throws error (An unexpected error has occured). If anyone has came across this issue, please suggest an work around.
