I downloaded the latest change set # 7484

After downloading and extracting the zip to its own directory, I used visual C# express to "Build Solution" and when that was complete there was a RichTextEditor.dll in the bin/release section of the downloaded directory.

I then created a new project in Visual Web Developer 2008. I created a folder called Bin and put the RichTextEditor.dll into the bin directory.

I then went into default.aspx and added two lines to get it to work. (I wish then would add these steps to the home page!)

For those still looking for a solution, you might want to try this:
Rte.cs
In the OnPreRender code. Underneath these lines:
Global.Instance.Resource.RegisterClientImmediateScript(this, "emoticonsadd", scriptBuilder.ToString());
Global.Instance.Resource.RegisterClientImmediateScript(this, "editorLinks", "var editCssUrl = \'" + Global.Instance.Resource.GetUrl(this.Page, "AjaxControls.edit.css") + "\';");
Global.Instance.Resource.RegisterClientImmediateScript(this, "editorIdinit", "var editorId = '" + this.TextEditorClientID + "' ;");
Global.Instance.Resource.RegisterClientImmediateScript(this, "RichEditIdinit", "var RichEditId = '" + this.iFrame.ClientID + "' ;");
Global.Instance.Resource.RegisterClientImmediateScript(this, "RteIdinit", "var RteId = '" + this.ClientID + "' ;");
Global.Instance.Resource.RegisterClientImmediateScript(this, "RteToolbarId", "var RteToolbarId = '" + toolbar.ClientID + "' ;");

Add the following code:

Then in the RteStartup.js file. in the "browser = {" declaration, underneath this line:

richeditor.EditMode = true;

Add the following code:

if (!RteEnabled)
{
richeditor.GetDocument().body.disabled = true;
}

This ties the controls built in Enabled property to the editors body.disabled attribute. Haven't tested it much. I have heavily modified the source code, but making this change in the original source should work.

Ok, let's see...
If you look at TextBox component (System.Web.UI.WebControls.TextBox), you'll see a property called 'ReadOnly'.
The default value for this property is false, which makes it editable. If you change the property value to true, user can not change the text in the text box.
That's exactly what I am looking for in the RichTextEditor.
I hope this is clear enough.

I'd rather not because that is just an ugly work around. I like to have a ReadOnly property for the component and control it ptogramatically.

My problem is that when I change the DomMode to true (client mode), I get some other errors. I have been spending too much time on fixing those errors. Now I've decided to use the Server mode, which is not using the TextArea tag. Have you tried that?

actually i am doing the same thing
code is as below

alert(richeditor.GetWindow().getSelection().getRangeAt(0).startOffset);

this is returning me current cursor position.
but here the problem is, current cursor position is representing cursor position in current selected line.
say if RichtextBox contains 3 lines
each line contains 10 characters and suppose my cursor is at 5th position in 2nd line
the above code returns current cursor position as 5
but i want it as 15 as it is actually at 15th position.

Probably will need to write something that checks to see if the various objects are available for usage, if document.selection & document.selection.createRange are available then use them, if window.getSelection is available then use it.

Yes I think you are correct, calls to the RichTextEditor classes Focus function are what to look for. The RTEStartup.js creates a RichTextEditor object called richeditor. I have modified this area so much it is difficult to remember exactly what happens where in the original version. But you are definetely on the right track.

You can rig up a property to enable/disable the TextArea Tag along with the toolbar. NOTE: for some silly reason the TextArea tag has a "disabled" attribute rather than "enabled" so you will have to negate your booleans to make it respond like "enabled". I made similar properties, so if you have further questions don't hesitate to ask.

I do not have much experience with firefox, but the way you describe the problem makes me think that it could be a Page Request Validation issue. A quick way to test this is to set the page validation property to false by doing the following: <%@ Page ... some other stuff ... ValidateRequest="false" %> . If this doesn't do the trick, perhaps someone else can offer advice.

Well, I noticed in the sample web site a DIV is being used. That is a work around but it is not nice and clean. The ideal solution is to have a property to switch the text editor mode to ReadOnly or ReadWrite.
Many components have a similar property. (e.g. TextBox)
I have added two properties to the component to hide or show thw tabs and control bar but I have not been able to make the editor read only. I was hopeing that you can help me on that.

in my web application i am inserting text in RichText box at particular cursor position by using document.selection and then using createRange(). it works fine in IE but in Mozilla document.selection is not working. and hence i am not able to insert text in textarea at particular cursor position in Mozilla.

hi
i am using this control in my web application which is working fine in IE but i am facing some problem in Mozilla FF.
actually i am putting this control in Content page and that is also in Div tag which is again in one <td> tag

First problem is when i am opening the applciation , editor conrtrol is completely disable.
if i put it after Div tag then its working fine but in div tag it is throwing exception for the line richeditor,toHTMLString which is in javascript which i have written to get the HTML text from editor control.

i am unable to find out the cause of this. please help me out for this. its really very urgent.

Couldn't you just use a <div> or a <span> or just about any other element as the text in the RTE control is simply HTML? You could just create a <div> to put the text in and then swap the <div> out with the control when you want it editable.

Hi friends
i need you urgent Assisenatnce. i am using Rich text editor and no doubt it runs super with less effort. i have a small problem while running in the firefox. i am using this line of code
editor.value = richeditor.toHtmlString();
now when firfox consol hit this line of code it show exception and it won't allow my application to run furter. i am not sure how i can handle this situation. i event try to put it as
editor.value = richeditor.text;
but than it says the value is undefine. so please help me guys. i am working on VS2005

This line of code in Rte.cs generates an error:
textEditorClient.Style.Add(HtmlTextWriterStyle.Display, "none");

The error says:
NullReferenceException was unhandled by user code
